Annie makes a quick return with protest song, short film

Up until now releases from Annie were separated most times by years, leaving people awaiting new material from the talented and critically acclaimed artist.  But just a few months after the release of her “A&R” EP, and timed for the start up the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, Annie has released a song protesting Russia’s anti-gay stance, and paired it with a short film.  Both were released today.

The accompanying film is definitely in your face, with same sex couples in various states of undress making out, but the song itself is classic Annie: Throwback beat, sexy, slow building and infectious. The signer partnered with fellow Norwegian artist Bjarne Melgaard and video director Richard Kern to put the song and accompanying short film together, while Richard X, who produced the “A&R” tracks and other Annie favorites, is back helming this track.

A portion of the proceeds goes to allout.org, a worthy cause, and it’s nice to see Annie putting out a message with the music.  Fans of Annie will probably love the whispered cries of “Gimme a Kiss” the most; I think it’s another great triumph for the artist.
