It’s kind of crazy that Coldplay has been out there for 15 years, but yet they’ve been cranking out moody, introspective music successfully for quite some time. While their sound has evolved and changed with the times, the same core feeling and mood, led by Chris Martin’s singing, has thankfully remained intact.
The group’s sixth album, “Ghost Stories,” is set to come out later this year, and is preceded by electronic-driven single “Magic,” which fits nicely into their repertoire yet feels quite modern. Coldplay fans will be psyched, but the subtle change in tone with the single might draw a bit of attention from other corners as well.
Another single, “Midnight,” was also released last month, with an accompanying video. It is one of a few songs I’ve heard recently that seems to take a page from Imogen Heap’s “Hide and Seek” when it comes to the vocal layering. It builds to a somewhat higher crescendo but it, too, is a bit more electronic focused, and like other Coldplay songs, it doesn’t quite hit the level of heights you expect from other artists; it manages to stay a bit more mellow than normally expected, which is one of their trademarks.
“Ghost Stories” is due in May.
