The Notorious B.I.G. has been gone for almost 20 years at this point, and while his legacy is strong, efforts to extend that legacy posthumously fell flat in many ways. Many of the tracks only contained small snippets of his rapping, and given they were leftovers, probably wasn’t the strongest material to work with.
Matoma, a music producer, took a track from his greatest his collection, “Want that Old Thing Back,” reworked the production heavily, and the resulting “Old Thing Back” feels more lively and enjoyable than most of what was put out there.
While it doesn’t resolve the criticisms around the source of the original rapping, it does liven up the proceedings and keep his memory alive in a new way. The track itself is much more fun than the original version, and does the song and artists, Ja Rule and Ralph Tresvant along with Biggie, justice.
