Those hipsters and their skinny jeans almost created a crisis for the U.S.

stretching-money

This headline means one of two things:

  1. I can write one those god-awful clickbait headlines with the best of them; headline writing became a strength for me when I worked at a newspaper.
  2. GET OFF MY LAWN! (Or something like that.)

This is just one of those “weird, but true” posts, but the Washington Post Wonkblog relayed a story about U.S. money, and how the special paper it was printed on was almost ruined by changes in denim manufacturing.  As tighter jeans became the norm, spandex found its way into the denim being produced, literally changing the fabric of what’s found in denim.

Since the cotton in money derived from scraps of denim provided by the fashion industry, and spandex in said denim could ruin the paper, a problem arose, given that spandex is now standard in denim.  A solution was found, but it’s funny how changing fashion put our currency at risk.

I’ve heard of stretching a buck, but this is ridiculous!

Be sure to tip your waitress and try the veal.
