The clever design of ‘Threes,’ and what could’ve been

threes

I wrote here previously about the amazingly simple yet addictive game called “Threes,” which started out on iOS but ultimately made its way to Android, but not before a clone called “2048” went nuts on the platform.

Of course, the amazing thought and care into the design of Threes! is what makes it special, and Wired has a great write-up on the evolution of the game’s design, directions it was going for awhile, and how they ended up with the incredibly simple, yet effective game design.

In short, it’s about being willing to sacrifice clunky features, throw out designs even when you’re deep into development, and continue to try different approaches. It’s a great look into the complexity of nailing a design, and an awesome behind-the-scenes look at a great game.
