Thoughts on Kylie Minogue’s latest, ‘Kiss Me Once’

kylie-kiss-me-once

Having reviewed pretty much every Kylie release since I entered college (and she made her big U.S. return), I feel obligated, having chewed on “Kiss Me Once” since its release, to say something about it.  My initial reaction, carried through from the album preview I posted here a few weeks back, wasn’t that great, and I still can’t say I’m quite as enthused about this as her previous efforts. Postmodern Jukebox shows the pliability of popular songs

postmodern-jukebox

I feel so woefully behind sometimes when I am late to the party to discover something really cool, but it didn’t stop me from being amazed by it nonetheless.  This week I was introduced to the wonder that is Scott Bradlee’s Postmodern Jukebox thanks to a friend’s Facebook post. Continue reading

Required listening: Roxette’s “Have a Nice Day”

roxette-virgin-megastoreRoxette at Virgin Megastore in New York City in the fall of 2000. It was one of my first trips into the city on my own.

There are a lot of people familiar with Roxette; their hits in the late 80s and early 90s, such as “It Must’ve Been Love,” “The Look,” Listen to Your Heart,” “Fading Like a Flower” and “Joyride” are among some of the best pop songs of the era. Every so often Nick at The Littlest Winslow pops up a music post that catches my attention. A couple of weeks ago, he posted a few tracks by Cash Cash, which seems to blend the pop/EDM/dubstep line pretty well within their repertoire. Continue reading

Coldplay makes a little ‘Magic’

It’s kind of crazy that Coldplay has been out there for 15 years, but yet they’ve been cranking out moody, introspective music successfully for quite some time.  While their sound has evolved and changed with the times, the same core feeling and mood, led by Chris Martin’s singing, has thankfully remained intact. Continue reading

Required listening: Cartoons

cartoons

In the late 90s, novelty dance acts were picking up a bit of momentum.  One such act, at least in Europe, was Cartoons.  I became introduced to them while on a school-sponsored trip to Italy (my only such trip to Europe, alas), and saw their music video for “Witch Doctor” on TV. I picked up the album while there. Continue reading
