New York City, before and after

freedom-tower

New York as a city has certainly evolved, even has it retains much of the charm over the years that’s made it a place people have yearned to arrive at and thrive. A Huffington Post article, however, shows some of the inevitable change that happens when smaller businesses get replaced with larger ones, as the city ever changes, in a piece highlighting photos taken by James and Karla Murray for a new book, “STORE FRONT.” Continue reading

YouTube has everything: ‘Dance Mix USA’ commercials

dance-mix-usa

When I was first getting into music, I was a fan of WKTU out of New York, and it led me to explore a number of dance compilations.  A big name at the time was the “Dance Mix USA” series from Quality and Radikal Records.  At their peak in the mid-90s, they were the go-to collection of dance hits, well mixed and put together, with a lot of great tracks that I recognized from the radio. YouTube has everything: Today’s Special

Children’s television in the 80s was experimental in some ways.  While more established shows like “Sesame Street” had by a certain point long since found their purpose, the proliferation of channels offered the opportunity for a broader array of programming of all types to appear.  As such, a TV Ontario-produced show, “Today’s Special,” made its way onto U.S. airwaves by way of Nickelodeon and PBS. An illegal jump, but what a view

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nz7sxt9xeJE

There’s all sorts of things wrong with this video – how did they make it past security? How is it a good idea to do any sort of jump like this in an urban area? – yet the video itself is undoubtedly compelling. Without further commentary, check out what a group of people did when they snuck through security last fall and went to the top of the Freedom Tower.

YouTube has everything: Classic SCTV sketches

sctv-classics

While Saturday Night Live has lasted for nearly 40 years now, there was a point, as the original cast was moving on, that another show was set up to potentially supplant it. It didn’t succeed, but the legacy of SCTV lives on, and thankfully some of the classic bits are readily available thanks to the Internet. Continue reading

Peanuts revival looks promising

peanuts-movie

For me, animated films are hit or miss.  Some look really cool, others don’t impress me. So when I saw that a trailer for a Peanuts movie coming next year, I was curious, although concerned, given that creator Charles Schultz had passed and it was his unique vision that made the characters so special. Based on the trailer, my concerns are, for now, allayed. Continue reading

Sounds of the Seventies: Pharrell Williams edition

daft-punk

Last year, Pharrell Williams and Daft Punk unleashed a surprising left turn with the instrumentally-driven disco number “Get Lucky.” It was a great return for both Daft Punk and Pharrell, who had been quiet for awhile leading up to it.

Pharrell’s career, meanwhile, has rebounded thanks to the song, with “Happy” now making the rounds.  But it’s a second collaboration between Daft Punk and Pharrell that’s got my ears perked. Continue reading

YouTube has everything: Carol Burnett outtakes

Last year I bought the gigantic Time Life box set of The Carol Burnett Show, and I’ve found the program incredibly entertaining to watch. Among the fabled outtakes and bloopers from the show is the one above, where Tim Conway improvises about an elephant during a Mama’s Family sketch. Every time they think they got out of it, he kept going. Continue reading
