This just seems like it’s asking for it: A company has received approval to bring a line of powered alcohol to market in the coming months, which is supposed to make creating mixed drinks either, but in an era of Four Loko and other drinks that had unintended side effects, I can only imagine what this could do. A photo-op that almost went really awry
Above is Richard Blumenthal, a current U.S. Senator for Connecticut and, at the time, our state’s attorney general. He gained a reputation for being very vocal and fighting on behalf of our residents, although some questioned his tactics. He showed up at a fundraiser I was co-chairing a few years back as he was running for his current seat. Continue reading
Fitting a city into a ‘healthy’ county
Fairfield County, because of its size, proximity to New York, and its diversity, many times finds its residents categorized broadly when the details aren’t nearly as black and white. A recent example was a fitness study that categorized the fittest regions. Continue reading
YouTube has everything: The Richard Bey Show
At the height of the trash talk show mania, one stood out for me even amongst the many others: The Richard Bey Show. Produced by WWOR in the New York area and syndicated nationally, I became aware of it as a teenager once my family moved to the tri-state area, and for awhile, like many, I was hooked. Continue reading
Turn off auto-play on Facebook’s videos
As Facebook continues its relentless march towards world domination, it continues to make decisions that will help it earn revenue, something that is at times at odds with what users would choose as their ideal experience. One such decision is auto-play videos and their growing prominence in the newsfeed. Fortunately, like with other settings that has led Facebook to catch some flack, there is a way to turn it off. Continue reading
Flight attendant turned comedian: The safety speech evolved
I’ve posted here about safety presentations and things airlines like Delta are doing to modernize them. Southwest has long had a history of flight attendants with good senses of humor and a bit of playful fun, but a video going viral this week takes the cake in a very good way. Continue reading
Robyn & Royksopp preview new track ‘Monument’
Last summer, I wrote here about Annie’s return to recording after a long absence, reuniting with collaborator Richard X to put out a 5-song EP of new music. It appears Robyn is following a similar pattern, with the announcement of an EP as a collaboration with a duo she has a long history with, Royksopp. Continue reading
Postmodern Jukebox takes on Ellie Goulding’s ‘Burn’
I know I just posted about Postmodern Jukebox last month, but I’m really getting into what they’re doing to transform pop hits into another era. I also think the pairing of singers, era and tune is getting stronger as they move along; their take on Ellie Goulding’s “Burn” is particularly inspired. Continue reading
High speed fiber in New York still a pipe dream for many
With the infrastructure of New York being as old as it is, it’s probably no surprise that much of it is aging. Indeed, I’ve mentioned here the challenges the city has faced in other areas of that category, but I was a bit surprised, although I’m not sure I should’ve been, to learn that when it comes to wiring the city with modern fiber optics for high-speed internet and the like, challenges persist as well. Continue reading
The story behind the iconic Windows XP “Bliss” photo
Windows XP finally, after more than a decade, reached end of life earlier this week, finally marking the end of a storied operating system that, despite a few early hiccups and a couple of major security issues that, by Service Pack 2, stabilized the OS and ensured its longevity. Continue reading
