Those crazy hipsters and their facial hair implants

hipster-beard

Deception in the form of a beard isn’t anything new to those in the gay community, but this is a brand new form of it that’s both amusing and a bit crazy to me.

When I read this article in the New York Post about people getting facial hair implants so they can grow a beard, it seemed both obvious and ridiculous. Continue reading

Sounds of the Seventies: Pharrell Williams edition

daft-punk

Last year, Pharrell Williams and Daft Punk unleashed a surprising left turn with the instrumentally-driven disco number “Get Lucky.” It was a great return for both Daft Punk and Pharrell, who had been quiet for awhile leading up to it.

Pharrell’s career, meanwhile, has rebounded thanks to the song, with “Happy” now making the rounds.  But it’s a second collaboration between Daft Punk and Pharrell that’s got my ears perked. Continue reading

YouTube has everything: Carol Burnett outtakes

Last year I bought the gigantic Time Life box set of The Carol Burnett Show, and I’ve found the program incredibly entertaining to watch. Among the fabled outtakes and bloopers from the show is the one above, where Tim Conway improvises about an elephant during a Mama’s Family sketch. Every time they think they got out of it, he kept going. Continue reading

Taco Bell dives into the breakfast menu game with a splash

taco-bell-breakfast

The latest fast food war is going after what’s routinely called the most important meal of the day: Breakfast.  Following the lead of other chains like Subway, Taco Bell is entering the breakfast realm with its “first meal” menu that takes a page from the recent “Satisfries” announcement by having a catchy gimmick within the stack of breakfast items: the Waffle Taco. Changing my mind about Avicii

avicii

When Avicii first saw mainstream success with “Levels,” I was a bit baffled. I didn’t really think the song was particularly different than other instrumental tracks of the genre, and while I was happy to see a dance song see success, I poked around a bit more of his catalog and thought the music felt a bit same-y, which for me is a turn off when it comes to dance music. Seeking the elegant solution: Support for all devices

touchscreen-devices

While on a trip awhile back, I tripped across something that I thought was strange. When trying to connect to WiFi on a touchscreen device, it wouldn’t work.  It wasn’t because the device couldn’t connect to the actual access point – that’s happened before for various reasons.  This time, it was because the submit button for the terms and conditions wouldn’t respond to a touch on a touchscreen. Somehow, an entire class of devices were missed, render the WiFi useless in that case. Continue reading

Programming note: Fundraising season

This is traditionally a busy time of year for me; this year, through calendar shifts, two fundraisers that I support happened back to back weekends.  This post is going up retroactively to mark time, as this was the first break in the posting schedule in months and I want a fighting chance of rebounding, but this weekend was the Imperial Sovereign Court of All Connecticut‘s Coronation, and the following weekend is the New Haven Pride Center‘s Dorothy Awards.

I’ll do my best to keep posting up through the duration, but a gap may be inevitable until after March 1.

YouTube has everything: Karen Carpenter’s aborted solo efforts

karen-carpenter

Karen Carpenter was still a vocal powerhouse when she passed away, way too young, in 1983 at the age of 33.  The New Haven, Conn.-born singer struggled with anorexia for a large portion of her adult life, and eventually it became too much for her body to take. Her legacy stands strong more than three decades later, with a number of stellar efforts recorded with her brother, Richard, as the duo The Carpenters. Continue reading
