My love of gameshows has probably come through by now here on the site.  When it comes to trivia, the king of the past few decades has arguably been “Jeopardy!,” which makes sense as it’s the most straight-ahead quiz show, and it’s persevered in ways that most don’t, with editions around the world. Sure, there’s shows like “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire,” but while the amounts of money offered are surely impressive, the intensity level is of a different sort. Continue reading

YouTube has everything: ‘Penn & Teller: Fool Us’

josh-and-teller

In May I shared my visit to the MGM Grand at Foxwoods, where I had the opportunity to catch Penn & Teller live. They’re incredibly talented and put on a hell of a show.  But they don’t just do live acts; they’ve also had various television shows to spread their magic, in both literal and figurative senses, far and wide. The real facts behind that McDonald’s coffee lawsuit

The McDonald’s spilled coffee story and lawsuit that came out in the 90s endures somehow, a prime example of a story going viral long before Twitter and Facebook existed.  Yet while some are lamenting the problems that the immediacy of social media brings and the major pitfalls we’re failing to avoid, it’s not an exclusively online problem, either. YouTube has everything: Press Your Luck

I was very big into game shows growing up; I loved watching Wheel of Fortune, Jeopardy!, The Price is Right, Family Feud, and reruns of a number of gameshows that aired back in the day on USA Network. The discovery of GSN when I got to college created a further appreciation that introduced me to games of which I wasn’t previously aware, such as Match Game. Continue reading

Required viewing: Larry Miller’s ‘Five Stages of Drinking’

This routine is a classic.  Larry Miller, a comedian whose name you may not know off the top of your head but certainly will look familiar from a career filled with movies, TV and stand-up comedy, has the quintessential take on drinking and the various permutations of nights that can pop up. Continue reading

YouTube has everything: Night Stand with Dick Dietrick

In the mid-90s, a show that aired in syndication late nights for a couple of seasons, and also aired as a companion to Howard Stern’s radio show and Talk Soup on E!, was a favorite of my father’s and I.  “Night Stand with Dick Dietrick” was a show I enjoyed so much I made a fan site for it when I was in high school. The women of SNL invite you to check out their ‘Twin Bed’

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dCCV_nB7HJk

It was bound to be a highlight of the season: Jimmy Fallon returned Saturday to SNL, with Justin Timberlake as a musical guest.  The cameo-filled episode also included a number of sketches that the duo were famous for, enough so that it could be forgiven for someone not paying attention to think they were hosting together. Continue reading

YouTube has everything: Square One TV and Mathnet

As a kid, when others were watching MTV (I remember the first time I saw “Baby Got Back,” before it was banned, at my sitter’s house), I was watching a math-based children’s program called “Square One TV.” I was always a bit of a math junkie, and the show had it all: music videos by famous singers, recurring segments, corny humor, and the cornerstone at the end of each episode, Mathnet. Rebecca Black finally makes obvious follow-up: ‘Saturday’

It’s taken almost three years, but internet viral sensation Rebecca Black, almost universally panned for her song “Friday,” which ignited careers that both her and producer Patrice Wilson have heavily leveraged since, has finally, after a bunch of follow-up singles, come around to making “Saturday,” the proper follow-up, and of course released Saturday. Continue reading
